Software Freedom Day 2008....
well what can i say more than to stress that it was great.
the programme started at 10:28am on saturday, 20th september at the computer center Lab 2...It kicked off with Bot Emmanuel(username--bote), who was the mc of the day. He welcomed the students and gave a brief introduction to the day being celebrated.
Nanyak Loknan (username--nanyaks) came up next and gave a talk on the Software Freedom and the Open source Philosophy and people were just glue to what we were offering..
An Introduction to UJgeeks was given by Nwachukwu Chidi (username--nwachukwuc) which was about orienting the users about the geeks, their mission, aims etc. It seemed the users were not having enough and we couldnt refuse giving them what we had..... Daser Sunday (username--sundayd) was up next talking about "the future of the geeks". The quiz was next and participation was grate on the side of the audience; they answered questions and though most of them were "very wrong", we had a lot of fun.

The advent of open source in kaduna took no dramatic phenomenom as that has always been the norm when programmers perceive any whisper of "OPEN".
It all started with a seminar about "THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE LINUX KERNEL" and "SYSTEM PROGRAMMING IN THE LINUX PLATFORM" and "OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGY" by a renowned IT firm in Kaduna state of Nigeria in which an open source programmer Daser Sunday David was invited as guest speaker to speak on the topics. As greatness as always been the virtue of the free and open source technology, the seminar was conducted in such greatness.

Mono brings Visual Basic programs to Linux

Submitted by Omo Oaiya on Tue, 2007-02-20 20:33.

The Mono Project on Feb. 20 announced that it has developed a Visual Basic compiler that will enable software developers who use Microsoft Visual Basic to run their applications on any platform that supports Mono, such as Linux, without any code modifications.

Though often disparaged by developers, Visual Basic remains one of the world's most commonly used programming languages. According to Forrester Research, 37 percent of enterprises use Microsoft Visual Basic.NET for development and maintenance of their in-house applications. What's more, among .NET developers, 59 percent use Visual Basic.NET as their only programming language. Thus, as of 2006, at least 20 percent of all in-house business programs were still being written in Basic, according to the market analyst firm.
